Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a figment of science fiction. It's here, and it's changing the world as we know it. On November 30, 2022, OpenAI (Mission District, San Francisco, CA) released a dialogue-based (artificial intelligence) AI chat interface, ChatGPT, which rapidly swept through the Internet to reach over 1 million users just in five days (compared to Instagram in 2.5 months, Facebook in 10 months). In essence, ChatGPT is an AI model that uses machine learning algorithms to analyze and understand the meaning of text inputs and then generate responses based on that input. For example, it can hold surprisingly coherent conversations on a string of related questions with us like another human being in a wide range of topics, explain complicated concepts (e.g. quantum physics or carcinoma vs. cancer), write a short essay on various topics, or a course outline for lectures, make up short bedtime stories for kids on the fly, write and debug computer programs. Of note, it is not a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing, and can perform tasks with “intelligence” – such as composing poems in different styles, solving math problems, accepting live TV interviews, offering advice on a wide range of practical endeavors such as how to apologize to your spouse, etc. The list seems to be endless, and its capability challenges our imagination.
ChatGPT is the most recent version of one of the most advanced models in AI, generative pre-training transformer (GPT). With its unparalleled understanding of natural language and ability to generate human-like text, it's poised to revolutionize not just one, but multiple industries. But make no mistake, this is not just a technological advancement, it's a revolution. A revolution that will change the way we live, work and think. ChatGPT is ushering in a new era, where machines can think and speak like humans, and they can do it better. This is the AI Apocalypse, and it's happening now.
Imagine a future where machines can analyze medical records and images to make life-saving diagnoses in mere seconds. Where they can assist in the development of new drugs and treatments, by combing through vast amounts of scientific data in a fraction of the time it would take human researchers. This is the future that ChatGPT is ushering in. But it's not just in the field of medicine, where ChatGPT is making an impact, it's across multiple industries.
ChatGPT is also a game-changer in media and entertainment. With its ability to create new content quickly and efficiently, it's poised to revolutionize the way we consume media. Scripts for movies and TV shows, news articles, even entire novels, could be generated by ChatGPT with a level of creativity and nuance that rivals that of human writers. It's not just limited to the entertainment industry, ChatGPT can write legal documents, financial reports and more.
Why should we pay attention to such an AI tool at this time? We believe it deserves our time and efforts for at least three reasons.
Its performance and capabilities have progressed beyond the proof-of-concept stage and the feedback from users and the tech industry has been overwhelmingly positive.
It offers quite a few functionalities that we can directly benefit from in our daily practice in pathology.
AI tools like ChatGPT hold great promise and are likely to have a significant impact on diagnostic medicine.
Those with knowledge and skill to use AI tools like ChatGTP will have apparent competitive advantages in the future healthcare environment.
In this series of blog on “AI in Pathology”, we will introduce ChatGPT and relevant AI basics, provide examples of common uses in pathology, and offer helpful tips.
ChatGPT is not just a tool, it's a game-changer. Its capabilities are nothing short of astounding and its potential impact on the world is limitless. It's time to embrace the future and see what ChatGPT can do for us, but also be mindful of the potential consequences and take steps to mitigate them. The future is here, the AI Apocalypse has begun and it's time to see what ChatGPT can do.
